National Executive Committee Member of the NDC, Nii Tan Sackey, has clarified that government policies may occasionally be introduced outside the national budget framework when faced with pressing national concerns.
In an interview with ABC News GH, Mr. Sackey stated that such decisions are often taken under a certificate of urgency, allowing the government to swiftly address economic challenges without waiting for formal budget revisions.
“The urgency of this is something that was never planned for.”
“There is the need for us to pay to make sure things work out. We need to do it to ensure that the economy runs,” he said.
Mr. Sackey’s comments were made in response to growing public reactions to the newly introduced GH¢1 per litre fuel levy.
He stressed the necessity of such interventions, explaining that they are not deviations from governance but rather reflections of a responsive administration.
“The urgent need for revenue has compelled the government to introduce taxes aimed at stabilizing and improving the economy,” he said, urging Ghanaians to look beyond political narratives and support critical decisions taken in the national interest.
