South Africa’s Aiden Smith has claimed gold in the men’s shot put event at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships, delivering a winning throw of 20.01 metres at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra.
Smith, who is regarded as one of Southern Africa’s leading shot putters, produced the decisive throw to top the field, adding another continental title to his growing list of achievements.
However, the athlete’s participation at the championships has also drawn attention following his comments alleging challenges with athlete welfare during the competition. Smith claimed that food was being rationed at the athletes’ dining facility, raising concerns about conditions at the event.
He described his experience at the dining hall, saying: “The eating hall, we go there, we ask for food and they fight with us. We’re not allowed to take more than one chicken bone…and then I fight with them like listen I need to eat then they say, okay, I’ll give me at least two”
The allegations prompted a response from Ghana’s National Sports Authority, with Deputy Director General Veronica Commey expressing surprise at the claims and indicating that the matter would be looked into.
Despite the off-field controversy, Smith maintained focus in competition and celebrated his qualification for the next World Athletics Championships in Beijing after securing gold.
Speaking after his victory, he said: “I feel great, I’m glad I got the medal, I’m glad I got the win, I got the wild card for Beijing 2027, that’s what we came for”
Smith’s win adds to South Africa’s strong showing at the championships, which are currently underway in Accra from May 12 to May 17 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
