The Ghana Police Service has interdicted a police officer who assaulted a GH One TV reporter during coverage of the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun election.
The officer, whose name has not been disclosed, was captured on camera slapping the journalist in what many have described as a blatant attack on press freedom.
The incident, which occurred at one of the polling centres, has since sparked widespread outrage from the media fraternity and civil society organisations.
In a statement issued by the Police, it was confirmed that the officer has been withdrawn from duties relating to the ongoing electoral process.
“The officer concerned has been redrawn from the ongoing election at Ablekuma North and in line with internal disciplinary procedures, interdicted,” the statement read.
The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to upholding professionalism and pledged to investigate the incident thoroughly to ensure accountability.
The assault is one of three separate attacks on journalists reported across polling centres in Ablekuma North.
The latest wave of violence against media personnel has heightened concerns over the safety of reporters during national events.
