The government is set to launch a forensic audit into the troubled National Cathedral project following revelations of financial misconduct and procurement violations uncovered by Deloitte and Touche.
The audit report has already raised alarm over unaccounted payments and overlapping contracts that have drained an estimated $97 million in public funds without progress on the project.
Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, announced at a July 18 press conference that the Auditor-General will spearhead the forensic audit, which will determine the extent of the financial impropriety and shape decisions about the project’s future.
“Decisive action will be taken regarding any impropriety determined and the future of the project itself,” he stated.
In addition, the Attorney-General is initiating legal steps to cancel ongoing contractual arrangements related to the Cathedral.
The move follows President Mahama’s decision to dissolve the Secretariat effective May 1, marking a significant shift in how the project will be handled going forward.
