England midfielder Jude Bellingham has admitted he did not deserve the Player of the Match award following England’s goalless draw with Ghana, insisting the honour should have gone to one of the Black Stars’ defenders after a disciplined defensive display.
The highly anticipated Group L encounter ended 0-0, with Ghana producing a compact and well-organised performance that successfully neutralised England’s attacking threats throughout the match. The result leaves both sides level on points as the group stage heads into its decisive fixtures.
Despite being named the official Player of the Match, Bellingham said the award did not reflect the reality of the game, where he struggled to find space and influence proceedings before being substituted in the second half.
“I didn’t deserve it, to be honest,” Jude Bellingham told broadcasters. “It probably should’ve gone to one of their lads who defended so well. Had a couple of moments but couldn’t get in the game. I’m grateful to whoever voted.”
Ghana’s defensive structure, organised under head coach Carlos Queiroz, was key to the result. The Black Stars maintained their shape effectively, limiting England’s chances and frustrating their star-studded frontline.
The performance saw the Ghana national football team earn widespread praise for their discipline and resilience, with their defensive unit standing firm against sustained pressure.
The draw keeps both teams firmly in contention in Group L, while Ghana will take confidence from a performance widely regarded as one of their most structured displays in recent tournament memory ahead of their final group matches
