Carlos Queiroz is expected to arrive in Ghana in the coming days for his official unveiling as head coach of the Black Stars, ushering in a decisive period in the team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician has been handed a short-term, four-month contract to lead Ghana into the global tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. He is expected to arrive with five members of his technical team as part of a broader restructuring of the national side’s backroom staff.

His appointment follows significant changes within the technical setup after Otto Addo parted ways with the team. The decision came on the back of disappointing friendly results, including a heavy defeat to Austria and a narrow loss to Germany.

In response, the Ghana Football Association moved quickly to secure Queiroz, relying on his extensive international experience to stabilise the team ahead of the tournament. As part of the shake-up, technical advisor and director of football Winfried Schäfer has reportedly been relieved of his duties, while high-performance coach John Paintsil is also said to have been dismissed. Further changes within the technical team are expected to accommodate the new coach’s backroom staff.

Plans are in place for a formal unveiling ceremony, where Queiroz will be introduced to the media and key stakeholders. He is also scheduled to meet the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, as part of official protocol.

Following his unveiling, Queiroz will immediately assume control of preparations, including upcoming international friendlies against Mexico and Wales in early June.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L for the World Cup and will begin its campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England and Croatia in subsequent fixtures.

With a wealth of experience that includes World Cup appearances with South Africa, Portugal and Iran, Queiroz is widely viewed as a steady and experienced figure capable of improving Ghana’s competitiveness as the Black Stars aim to avoid another early exit and make a stronger impact on the global stage.
