The Minority in Parliament has strongly criticised the newly announced cocoa producer price for the 2024/2025 season, describing it as a betrayal of Ghana’s hardworking cocoa farmers.
Addressing the press in Parliament on Tuesday, the Ranking Member on the Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs Committee, Dr. Yaw Owusu, condemned the approved price of $5,040 per tonne, saying it falls short of expectations and exposes the government’s inconsistency on cocoa pricing.
According to Dr. Owusu, the same NDC government that previously condemned similar pricing under the past administration has now failed to deliver a significant improvement, calling the move a “stab in the back” of cocoa farmers.
He noted that despite global cocoa prices surging, farmers in Ghana are yet to see a fair share of the gains.
The Minority believes the government has let farmers down and failed to uphold its promises of better livelihoods for the sector.
In a related development, the Minority also dismissed claims that the government is introducing new relief measures to support cocoa farmers.
According to Dr. Owusu, many of the initiatives being touted, such as fertilizer support and scholarships for farmers’ children, are existing programs that have been repackaged without any meaningful innovation.
