The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned and distanced itself from recent death threats targeted at President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, stressing that such acts do not reflect the values of the party.
Speaking during a visit to the national headquarters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Wednesday, August 13, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah told NDC executives, including National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, that the party disapproves of such conduct.
“Indeed, there are certain comments that are made by foot soldiers or even people who are not close to the party. But when such unfortunate, condemnable statements are made, it is important for the leadership to distance ourselves and make it clear that this is not the character of our party,” Koduah said.
He acknowledged that inflammatory remarks have come from individuals linked to both major political parties but emphasised that wishing death on anyone, especially a political opponent, undermines democratic principles.
“Some are claiming that the NPP is behind it, and some are even saying they expected other people to die. These things are not healthy for our democracy. Death is something that shouldn’t be wished for your worst enemy. So, if anything came from our side, on behalf of the party, we apologise to the NDC through you to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. It is not the position of the New Patriotic Party, and we never condone such activity,” he stressed.
Koduah’s remarks come in the wake of a Ghana Police Service investigation into a viral TikTok video in which an individual is heard issuing threats against the President and the First Lady.
Police say the video, widely circulated on social media, contains statements deemed threatening to their lives. Two suspects, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, have been arrested and are assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved in the recording and distribution of the video.
An Accra Circuit Court has granted Prince Ofori GHS100,000 bail with three sureties, to be fulfilled by two gainfully employed persons, and ordered him to surrender his passport until the court decides otherwise. He is expected to reappear in court on August 25, 2025.
