Parliament has given the green light to five ministerial nominees after a heated debate, but not without controversy.
While four of the nominees sailed through without opposition, the appointment of Samuel Nartey George as Minister-designate for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation was met with strong resistance from the Minority Caucus.
The Appointments Committee had recommended the nominations of Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, MP for Wa; Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, MP for Nanton; Samuel Nartey George, MP for Ningo-Prampram; Kofi Adams, MP for Buem; and Joseph Bukari Nikpe, MP for Saboba.
However, on February 4, 2025, the House, presided over by Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako, witnessed intense political maneuvering before the final approval.
Minority vs. Majority Over Sam George
Led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Caucus opposed Sam George’s nomination, citing his past critical remarks against former President Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
They insisted that his temperament and political stance made him unfit to lead the Communications Ministry.
The Majority Caucus, however, pushed back, dismissing the objections as baseless. “This is not about past political comments. It’s about competence, and Samuel George has proven his worth,” one Majority MP argued.
A Walkout That Sealed the Fate
Despite their strong opposition, the Minority ultimately abstained from voting, leaving the decision in the hands of the Majority.
With no votes cast against him, Sam George’s nomination was confirmed through a voice vote, much to the frustration of the opposition.
The approved ministers and their portfolios are:
- Hon. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo – Minister of Labour, Jobs, and Employment

- Hon. Samuel Nartey George – Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations
