The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has issued a profound reminder that Parliament should not be taken for granted, emphasizing its essential role in Ghana’s democratic governance.
Speaking at the Job 600 building commissioning in Accra on Tuesday, October 29, he stressed that the Legislature serves as the “mirror of Ghana’s democracy,” reflecting the people’s voice and ensuring the government remains accountable.
According to him, Parliament stands not only as a lawmaking body but as the central institution that oversees how resources and efforts are applied to benefit every citizen.
Mr. Bagbin reiterated that the significance of Parliament goes beyond legislative duties, embodying the core principles of representation and governance.
“If the people are to benefit from democratic governance, it is the Parliament…that should be strengthened,” he explained, underscoring the necessity of reinforcing Parliament to uphold its duties.
For him, Parliament’s function in oversight is crucial, as it is entrusted with safeguarding the people’s interests, especially in directing the nation’s collective resources, energy, and trust towards meaningful progress.
Appealing to stakeholders and citizens, Mr. Bagbin urged all to respect Parliament’s role in the nation’s democratic fabric. He highlighted that strengthening Parliament is not merely a responsibility of the institution but a collective effort to ensure citizens do not “suffer and struggle to elect us in vain.”
