The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has announced a 20% upward adjustment in public transport fares effective Friday, August 8, 2025.
In a press release, the council explained that the increase is to accommodate several rising costs within the transport sector.
The reasons cited include: The lack of corresponding reductions in spare parts, goods, and services despite an earlier 15% fare reduction on May 21, 2025.
Increased operational costs following the introduction of a GH₵1.00 per litre fuel levy, which has led to an approximate 8% rise in fuel expenses.
Rising maintenance costs due to deplorable road conditions nationwide.
The fare adjustment applies to all categories of commercial transport, including shared taxis, intra-city “tro-tro” operations, intercity (long-distance) services, and haulage.
The GRTCC is urging all commercial transport operators to comply with the new fares and display them at their loading terminals.
Commuters and the general public are also being asked to cooperate for the smooth implementation of the new fares.
