The Chief of Chogu in Tamale has banished two men from the community after they were caught stealing goats and confessed to the crime.
The suspects, Nafiwu Bakar, a national service person at the Bole Forestry Commission, and Rashid Yussif, both natives of Damongo in the Savannah Region, were apprehended last Friday by a local vigilante task force while attempting to steal goats in the area.
Instead of being handed over to the police, the duo was brought before traditional authorities for judgment.
After a brief deliberation led by the Chief and his elders, the community decided to exile the two men immediately.
The suspects reportedly admitted they were working under the instructions of others who had promised to pay them for the stolen animals.
However, the chiefs remained unswayed by their explanation, referencing growing incidents of petty crime and emphasizing the need to send a strong message to potential offenders.
In pronouncing the banishment, the Chief of Chogu underscored his commitment to preserving the safety and integrity of the community.
“We will not tolerate any act that threatens our peace,” he stated, adding that the action was necessary to deter similar crimes and uphold the moral fabric of the town.
The decision has since drawn support from residents who say swift traditional justice remains a powerful tool in maintaining order.
