A powerful tidal wave disaster has left Agavedzi residents in despair, destroying 51 houses and displacing over 300 people.
The Assembly Member for the Agavedzi Electoral Area, Ebenezer Assah, revealed the extent of the damage, noting that even the community cemetery was not spared.
“The sea has taken about 63 tombs so far, and the remaining bodies that we were able to retrieve have been transferred to other cemeteries,” he stated on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, March 2.
Assah warned that without urgent intervention and the continuation of the sea defense project, more cemeteries and properties could be lost.
He also highlighted the growing vulnerability of the community, pointing out that residents now rely on the major road connecting Aflao and Anloga.
“If nothing is done to stop the ravages of the tidal waves, it won’t take away the only hope we have – our major road,” he stressed, calling on the government to act swiftly.
Meanwhile, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has declared a ‘state of emergency’ following extensive coastal erosion in the Ketu South Municipality.
With high tides continuously washing away communities, Gunu described the situation as a national security threat and urged for immediate intervention to prevent further destruction and safeguard affected residents.
