Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has issued a strong warning ahead of the Akwatia by-election in the Eastern Region, cautioning that anyone who attempts to disrupt the process with violence will face equal resistance from the police.
Speaking after the Police Management Board (POMAB) toured the High-Risk Operation Training Centre at Akyerematen on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the IGP assured the public of maximum security for voters, electoral officers, political parties, and observers during the poll.
According to him, the Ghana Police Service is fully prepared to deal decisively with mischief-makers who may want to undermine the credibility of the exercise.
“We are fully prepared. If you come quietly, we will also observe quietly, but if you have any intention to cause trouble, we will not allow you. No one will be allowed to go free. If you come armed, we will meet you with arm,” Mr. Yohuno stressed.
The IGP further admitted that by-elections are often challenging to manage due to heightened political tension but assured the nation that the police are adequately resourced and trained to maintain peace in Akwatia.
He reiterated that the state security agencies will remain impartial but firm, ensuring that law and order prevail while the people of Akwatia exercise their democratic right without fear or intimidation.
