The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has rejected West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC’s) decision to release the withheld WASSCE results on February 28, 2025, arguing that the timeline is too long and does not serve the interests of students.
Speaking on ABC Midday News on Thursday, February 20, NUGS Chairman Noah Osei Asenso indicated that the delay is an injustice to affected candidates, as most tertiary institutions would have already closed their admission process by then.
“What am I supposed to do with a result that comes after all university admissions have closed?” Asenso questioned.
“WAEC’s decision is completely unfair to students who have worked hard and deserve a chance at higher education.”
He stressed that WAEC should have addressed any concerns much earlier instead of putting students’ futures at risk.
NUGS has also raised concerns about WAEC’s crisis management processes, calling for a full reform of the examination body.
Asenso argued that WAEC needs to develop a more efficient system for handling issues such as exam malpractice investigations to avoid unnecessary delays that affect students nationwide.
The student body has insisted that the Ministry of Education must intervene to ensure that WAEC prioritizes the well-being of students. “This is a national security issue, and we should probe into it,” Asenso stated.
NUGS has vowed to continue pushing for reforms, promising more protests if their concerns are not addressed.
