The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed claims that John Dramani Mahama intends to scrap the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy if elected president.
Speaking on ABC Midday News on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Communications Team member of the NDC, Louisa Kwakye emphasized Mahama’s commitment to refining the program by addressing implementation flaws left by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“Rather than cancel the policy, Mahama will seal all loopholes to ensure accessibility, quality, and poverty alleviation for parents burdened by school fees,” she asserted.
The representative highlighted Mahama’s Progressive Free Senior High School initiative, launched in 2015, as a testament to his dedication to accessible education.
As part of his five-day campaign tour in the Eastern Region, Mahama is engaging residents in key constituencies, including Begro, New Juaben North, and Abuakwa North.
The NDC’s campaign has spotlighted pressing issues such as the adverse impact of illegal mining (galamsey) on agriculture, the region’s primary economic activity.
“Mahama has vowed to put his presidency on the line to fight galamsey,” the spokesperson revealed, adding that communities in Akufo-Addo’s own hometown are grappling with severe consequences of environmental degradation.
The tour has also drawn attention to deteriorating infrastructure in the region, particularly the Kumasi Highway.
Criticizing the government’s claims of constructing over 12,000 kilometers of asphalted roads, the NDC representative posed a pointed question: “Where are the roads?” She further demanded accountability for the over $700 billion borrowed by the Akufo-Addo administration, questioning how the funds were utilized as residents endure crumbling infrastructure and declining livelihoods.
The NDC reiterated its commitment to addressing these concerns and delivering sustainable solutions for Ghanaians if voted into to into power in the December 7 election.
