The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is fully prepared for the rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.
Deputy Director of Elections for the NDC, Mahdi Gibril, speaking to ABC News GH, described the development as a positive step.
“It takes a day to run an election and the NDC is ready,” he said, expressing confidence in his party’s preparedness. According to him, although the party had hoped for a rerun across all 37 polling stations, it accepts the decision and remains focused on winning the rerun.
Gibril emphasized that the NDC has long demanded a rerun in Ablekuma North due to irregularities in the collation process after the December 7, 2024, election.
“This has been what the NDC has been calling for,” he noted.
His comments follow the Electoral Commission’s (EC) announcement that the rerun was necessary after verification challenges with scanned pink sheets used in the original collation.
The NDC had accused the EC of relying on documents provided solely by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), raising questions about transparency.
The EC clarified that only 18 out of the 37 scanned pink sheets could be verified by presiding officers and agents from both parties. The remaining 19—whose authenticity could not be confirmed—will therefore be subject to a rerun.
The Commission urged the Ghana Police Service to ensure adequate security, referencing previous incidents where supporters stormed the collation centre and damaged election documents.
A follow-up meeting on July 1 with representatives from the NDC and NPP failed to reach consensus, but the EC says the rerun is essential to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
