The NPP presidential primary is increasingly becoming a heated contest, with campaigns taking a “dirtier” turn as aspirants vie for the party’s flagbearer position, according to Alexander Akwasi Acquah, Member of Parliament for Akim Oda.
Speaking exclusively on ABC In The Morning, on Tuesday, 20th January, 2026, Mr. Acquah described the nature of the campaigns as “unfortunate,” noting that the high stakes involved have heightened tensions.
“The campaign is getting dirtier because the winner stands a higher chance of becoming the next President,” he said.
The MP for Akim Oda commended Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his measured response amid attacks, stating that the Vice President is demonstrating leadership by refusing to engage in negative exchanges.
“Bawumia is showing leadership by not responding to attacks against him”, Mr. Acquah noted
Beyond politics, the MP expressed concern about illegal mining (galamsey) in the country. He argued that arresting illegal miners is not enough to address the problem. “It is not enough to arrest people; we have to prosecute them,” Acquah said, emphasizing the need for accountability to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
The NPP presidential primary continues to dominate political discourse across the country, with all eyes closely monitoring developments as the party seeks to determine its flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
