Ghana’s Visa-free Policy Doesn’t Mean Automatic Entry for Africans — Minister for Foreign Affairs Clarifies

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has explained that the country’s upcoming visa-free policy for African travellers should not be interpreted as unrestricted access into the country.

His clarification follows the recent announcement by President John Dramani Mahama that Ghana will waive visa fees for all African nationals as part of efforts to promote continental integration.

According to the Minister, although travellers from across Africa will no longer be required to pay for visas, they will still need to apply and go through a screening process before being granted entry. He stressed that the initiative removes the financial burden of visa acquisition but does not eliminate the need for proper immigration checks.

In a Facebook post made on Friday April 3, Mr. Ablakwa cautioned against misconceptions surrounding the policy, noting that the absence of visa fees should not be confused with automatic approval. He underscored government’s commitment to maintaining national security through strict vetting procedures.

As part of measures to implement the policy, government is set to introduce an electronic visa system in May. The platform will serve as the primary channel for processing applications from all travellers, including those from African countries seeking to benefit from the new arrangement.

The system will be linked to Ghana’s Advanced Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record (API-PNR) infrastructure, along with international security databases. This integration, the Minister explained, will allow authorities to conduct comprehensive background checks on applicants before arrival.

He added that individuals flagged for criminal activity or considered potential security threats will not be permitted entry into the country, reaffirming that there will be no compromise on safety.

Mr. Ablakwa further revealed that the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Transport have made significant technological investments to support the smooth rollout of the policy and strengthen border management systems.

The visa-free initiative is scheduled to take effect on May 25, 2026, in line with Africa Day. Government expects the move to enhance mobility across the continent and deepen regional cooperation, while ensuring that security protocols remain firmly in place.
