The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially expressed its strong opposition to the recent decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to shift the date of the 2024 polls from December to November.

The Electoral Commission convened anInter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Monday, January 29, to engage with various political parties and discuss the proposed change in the date for the upcoming general elections.

In a statement released on January 30, 2024, the NDC dismissed the notion that the majority of the parties present at the meeting had given their consent to the proposed date. Fifi Fiave Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, highlighted that at least five out of the ten parties in attendance opposed the suggested date change, rendering the decision invalid in their eyes.

Kwetey emphasized that the EC’s Deputy Chairman, Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, who announced the proposed alteration, did not accurately represent the consensus reached during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting held on Monday.

The NDC went on to argue that the Electoral Commission should prioritize more critical matters, such as releasing the election calendar for 2024. They firmly suggested that proposing a new date, which lacks support from a significant portion of political parties, is not in the best interest of a fair and inclusive electoral process.
