The Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has clarified his comments on security and healthcare in Parliament following what he describes as misleading media reports.
Speaking after the inauguration of the 9th Parliamentary Service Board, he addressed concerns raised about the security of lawmakers and the need for improved healthcare services within Parliament.
In a statement issued today, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said his remarks on security and healthcare had been taken out of context by sections of the media, leading to misconceptions about his position.
He emphasized that his comments were in response to issues initially raised by the Speaker of Parliament.
On the issue of security, the Speaker had highlighted the vulnerability of Members of Parliament and Parliamentary Service staff.
Afenyo-Markin explained that if enhancing security within the current chamber was not feasible, a new chamber with better security features might need to be considered.
With regard to healthcare, he reiterated the Speaker’s concerns about access to medical care for MPs and staff.
According to the Minority Leader, such a facility would serve not only sitting MPs and staff but also retired MPs and officers, while remaining accessible to the general public where applicable.
