Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2028 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged government to consider declaring a state of emergency if forecasts of heavier rainfall are expected, warning that Ghana’s worsening flood situation could escalate further.
His comments come in the wake of Monday’s heavy rains that triggered widespread flooding across parts of the Greater Accra Region, leaving several communities submerged, properties destroyed and families displaced.
Speaking on Tuesday, June 30, during a visit to affected communities in Greater Accra, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern about the possibility of further rainfall worsening the already fragile situation.
“What is worrying for me is the forecast of even more rain to come. If more rain is expected, I believe the government should also consider declaring a state of emergency so that we deal with this in that particular form,” he said.
He stressed that the scale of the disaster requires a coordinated national response that goes beyond partisan lines, calling for the mobilisation of technical expertise to address both immediate challenges and long-term solutions.
“This is a real big problem for the country. We have to put all our energies, all our talent, all the engineers and hydrologists together, regardless of party, because this is for Ghana. Let us come together for Ghana and solve this problem,” he urged.
Dr. Bawumia further appealed for urgent relief support for victims, noting that many households had been left without basic necessities following the floods.
According to him, essential items such as food, clothing and mattresses are urgently needed to support displaced families as recovery efforts continue.
“People need food; people don’t have clothes; people don’t have mattresses. Let us make sure immediate relief reaches them,” he said.
He described the situation as a deeply painful human tragedy and reiterated the need for unity and swift action to reduce vulnerability to recurring floods across the country.
Dr. Bawumia also pledged to contribute personally to relief efforts while encouraging individuals, corporate bodies and community groups to support victims as authorities work to restore normalcy in affected areas.
