Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on President John Dramani Mahama to reverse what he describes as unjust dismissals of Ghanaians employed under the previous administration.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, February 19, he expressed deep concern over what he sees as a violation of the principles of fairness and justice enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
According to Dr. Bawumia, despite his initial decision to give the new government space to operate, the continued dismissal of public servants hired under the previous administration has forced him to break his silence.
He criticized President Mahama’s government for allegedly targeting individuals based on their employment history, stating, “It is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless, just because a different government employed them.”
He further denounced the removal of public service directors, nurses, teachers, and security personnel, arguing that their only offense appeared to be their association with the former administration.
Beyond job dismissals, Dr. Bawumia also raised alarm over attacks on journalists, military raids on former government officials’ homes, and increasing instances of mob violence, warning that these actions were reminiscent of a military coup rather than a peaceful democratic transition.
Calling for urgent intervention, Dr. Bawumia urged President Mahama to act as a leader for all Ghanaians, insisting that there is “no reset by repeating or escalating what may have happened in the past.”
He demanded an immediate halt to the dismissals and protection for all citizens, emphasizing that Ghana’s democracy must be safeguarded.
He concluded with a passionate plea for fairness, justice, and the protection of state institutions, stating that the country must do better to uphold democratic principles and ensure a just society for all.
