Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, was rushed to a hospital on Tuesday, May 27, after reportedly collapsing during an intense interrogation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, confirmed the incident but refused to disclose the name of the medical facility, stating only that his client was receiving treatment.
“We haven’t finished with the interrogation… we will come back to continue hopefully [Wednesday] if his condition improves,” Appiah Kubi added, revealing that the probe stemmed from alleged illegal mining activities and that Wontumi also faces a fresh legal suit from Exim Bank.
The sudden medical emergency sparked immediate political tension, with top NPP executives accusing EOCO and the ruling NDC of weaponizing state institutions to intimidate opposition figures.
National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye called the developments “political harassment,” vowing the party would resist what he sees as state-backed persecution.
Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover branded the arrest “Rambo-style” and part of a “violent political witch-hunt,” demanding EOCO produce formal charges or back off.
The dramatic scenes outside EOCO headquarters, with NPP supporters clashing with security forces, have further escalated partisan divisions and intensified scrutiny on the government’s handling of high-profile investigations.
