Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service today, Monday, May 26, 2025.
This follows a dramatic scene last Friday, May 23, when a joint team of National Security and police officers attempted to arrest him at his residence.
The effort, which ended without an arrest, drew crowds of NPP supporters to his home in protest, with many decrying the armed security presence.
Despite the failed operation, Wontumi reportedly gave his word to cooperate with authorities and voluntarily present himself today.
Confirming the decision to honour the CID invitation, Wontumi’s lawyer, Kwame Adom Appiah, said in an interview, “Wontumi is not someone who is going to run away… if you want him any time or day, you are going to get him.”
He insisted there is no criminal wrongdoing on their part and dismissed any fears about the legal process.
Meanwhile, Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi defended the operation, saying it was within protocol and not politically motivated.
“They went there with a reason… nobody wants to kill Wontumi,” he said, countering suggestions of intimidation and describing Wontumi’s comments as “playing the victim.”
