The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has urged the government to be transparent about the true state of the nation, especially regarding the ongoing power crisis.
Speaking to ABC News GH, Paul Ofori, Head of Research at COPEC, criticized the government’s handling of energy issues, stating that “they should tell us the real state of the nation instead of rephrasing their political manifesto.”
He acknowledged that while President Mahama had previously resolved the “dumsor” crisis, the current wave of power outages stems from aging Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and a lack of financial resources to sustain operations.
Ofori also pointed to the ongoing maintenance work at the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) as a key factor affecting power stability.
WAPCo has assured that the maintenance work, which temporarily halted gas supply on February 5, will be completed by March 2, 2025, with 70% of the work already done.
However, COPEC warns that without long-term solutions to energy financing and infrastructure, Ghana may continue to experience periodic blackouts.
