The Head of Research at the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Mr. Paul Ofori, has criticized the excessive politicization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), blaming it for the nation’s ongoing power crisis.
Speaking on ABC News GH, Mr. Ofori called on the government to remove political interference from the energy sector and allow qualified technical experts to take charge.
He argued that for years, ECG has been run by political appointees rather than industry professionals, a practice that has severely hampered efficiency and worsened the country’s power challenges.
Beyond the issue of political interference, Mr. Ofori urged the government to take urgent steps to curb the significant financial losses at ECG, which he described as a major drain on national productivity.
He emphasized that addressing these losses is crucial to ensuring a stable power supply and improving the overall economic performance of the country.
According to him, Ghana’s energy sector needs a fundamental shift towards professionalism and financial prudence to prevent recurring power crises that disrupt businesses and livelihoods.
