Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has raised concerns over Ghana’s struggling power sector, warning that urgent reforms are needed to prevent total collapse.
Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue on Tuesday, March 4, he pointed out that revenue collection does not match the amount of power distributed, leading to financial distress in the sector.
“We need private sector participation in the management of the sector. If not, the sector will collapse, and we are headed to that collapse already,” Jinapor cautioned.
He revealed that some power plants have already shut down due to non-payment of their bills, highlighting the need for financial discipline and improved efficiency.
“Some power plants have shut their plants today over non-payment of their bills,” he stated.
Jinapor called for urgent measures to ensure that electricity consumers, including government institutions, pay their bills on time to sustain the sector and avoid a looming power crisis.
