Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has confirmed that former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has resigned from her position as a member of the Council of State, following the formal acceptance of her resignation by the President.
He explained during the Government Accountability Series held on Monday, June 15, that Justice Akuffo had earlier submitted a resignation letter to the President in September 2025, indicating her intention to step down from the advisory body.
“I can confirm that indeed Justice Sophia A.B Akuffo has resigned from her position as a member of the council of state. She submitted a letter in September 2025 to the president, indicating her desire to resign,” he stated.
According to him, no reason was disclosed for her decision to resign at the time of submission.
“She did not disclose her reason for wanting to resign”, he said.
Kwakye Ofosu noted that upon receipt of the letter, the Presidency was required to acknowledge and act on it, but initially held off on accepting the resignation in order to engage her through the Council of State.
He explained that the engagement was aimed at understanding whether there were any grievances or concerns that informed her decision, and whether those issues could be addressed to persuade her to reconsider.
“When the president received the letter, he was required then to indicate his acceptance of the resignation but at the behest of the council of state, he had to hold on, because he wanted to engage Justice Sophia Akuffo to see if there was some grievances that she had that was informing her resignation, and if there was a way it could be addressed”
He further stated that after the engagement process, the Council of State advised that the resignation could be accepted.
“So they asked the President to hold on with the acceptance but they got back and they said that they had engaged, and as far as they were concerned, the resignation could be accepted, so the president has formally accepted her resignation, and she is no longer a member of the Council of State”, the Minister added.
The confirmation comes amid growing public interest following reports that Justice Akuffo had resigned as a Council of State member, bringing clarity to months of speculation surrounding her resignation from the advisory body.
