The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) is set to be renamed in honour of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, in recognition of his significant role in the university’s establishment.
The announcement was made by Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a meeting with the Governing Council of UHAS on May 28.
“Government has taken the decision to name the University of Health and Allied Sciences after the late J.E.A. Mills—a posthumous honour to recognise his contributions as a statesman, former President of the Republic, tax administrator, and respected academic,” the Minister stated.
He further revealed that a bill to formalise the renaming will be laid before Parliament in the coming weeks.
As part of a broader initiative to honour national icons through the education sector, the proposed new name will be the Professor J.E.A. Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences.
The Minister also assured the university’s leadership of government backing to address pressing challenges.
“I have directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to collaborate with the University to ensure the completion of ongoing infrastructure projects, as part of this year’s GETFund interventions,” he said.
Addressing financial hurdles, Haruna Iddrisu added, “Some allocations have been made to support public universities in addressing these financial burdens.”
