The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced the immediate withdrawal of its policy directive on retirement age and post-retirement contracts for senior academic staff in public universities.
In a letter dated April 27, 2026, GTEC said the decision follows a meeting between the Minister for Education and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG). The Minister subsequently directed the Commission to withdraw the policy, which had been issued on October 1, 2025.

The directive had set guidelines on retirement age and post-retirement contractual engagements for academic senior members across public universities, sparking concerns among stakeholders in the tertiary education sector.
According to GTEC, the withdrawal is in line with the Minister’s directive and is intended to pave the way for broader consultations. The Commission noted that further engagement with relevant stakeholders will be undertaken to ensure consensus and institutional sustainability before any revised policy is introduced.
“Pending further consultations with all relevant stakeholders to ensure broad consensus and institutional sustainability, GTEC hereby announces the immediate withdrawal of the attached policy directive,” the statement said.
The Commission added that additional guidance will be communicated after the conclusion of the stakeholder consultations.
