The five-member committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama to probe petitions against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo begins its public hearings today, Thursday, May 15, 2025.
The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was established under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution following a prima facie determination and consultations with the Council of State.
According to a statement by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the committee will convene three times a week and is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the President after completing its work.
The outcome of the hearings is anticipated to be pivotal in shaping the future of the Chief Justice, amid heightened public scrutiny and widespread debate.
Legal observers, civil society, and political actors alike are closely monitoring proceedings, as the case touches on critical issues of judicial independence and executive accountability.
