Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) and Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, has launched a sharp rebuttal against accusations leveled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Reacting to a protest staged by the Minority in Parliament, Dr. Tanko dismissed the uproar as a smokescreen. “EOCO knows what they are doing, and they’re dealing with financial crimes,” he asserted, pushing back against claims of political victimization.
“We are not trying to victimize anybody, but the law must work,” he added pointedly. He further condemned the parliamentary walkout, stating bluntly, “Hypocrisy is at work there.”
Dr. Tanko’s remarks come in the wake of escalating tensions between the two major parties over Wontumi’s continued detention under what the NPP describes as punitive and politically motivated bail conditions.
NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, known as Nana B, has called the GHS50 million bail requirement “a blatant abuse of state power,” questioning the legitimacy of EOCO’s approach.
Joined by Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin and several MPs, the NPP staged a protest march to EOCO headquarters on Thursday, May 29, decrying what they termed a weaponization of the justice system.
With voices like Kojo Oppong Nkrumah warning that “this is not law, it is politics,” the matter has ignited a broader debate over rule of law, institutional integrity, and political accountability in Ghana’s democratic landscape.
