Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo says her refusal to step aside is not an attempt to cling to power, but a duty to protect the integrity of Ghana’s justice system.
Speaking during a press briefing held today, she said her resistance to pressure is motivated by her 38 years of legal service and her duty to uphold constitutional values.
“I do not seek to cling to a title or position. However, as a lawyer, judge and Chief Justice, I consider it my obligation to speak up,” she noted.
Justice Torkornoo explained that the ongoing proceedings violate standard legal processes and could damage the judiciary if left unchallenged.
“If this model of removal can be tried on the Chief Justice, it can be repeated with everyone,” she warned, highlighting the broader implications of the case.
