President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation to work closely with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to immediately restore the broadcast of 64 radio stations recently shut down over regulatory breaches.
The President’s intervention follows growing public concern that the clampdown, which affected stations like Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM, could threaten media freedom while awaiting the completion of their regularisation.
In a statement released Thursday, President Mahama emphasised the need to balance regulatory enforcement with democratic values.
“The President believes regulatory compliance must take into account the need to uphold and enhance media freedom,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
To ensure order during the reinstatement, Mahama further instructed the Minister to collaborate with the NCA in establishing a reasonable timeframe for the affected stations to complete their regularisation process.
