Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, Hon. Korkor Asante, has condemned the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as an “outrageous” act that lacks any prima facie basis.
In a statement released on Friday, Hon. Asante stressed that, after careful review of the petitions and the Chief Justice’s responses, no reasonable observer could conclude that sufficient evidence exists to justify her removal.
She warned that politicising the judiciary in this manner undermines the constitutional order and risks turning Ghana’s democracy into an autocracy.
Hon. Asante further highlighted the essential role of the judiciary as the final bulwark of justice, particularly for the powerless and marginalized.
She argued that subjecting its head to politically driven processes sets a dangerous precedent, whereby successive administrations might manipulate legal institutions for partisan gain.
According to Asante, this erosion of judicial independence not only damages the reputation of the Judiciary but also inflicts lasting harm on the Republic itself.
In closing, Hon. Asante urged Ghanaians and democratic institutions alike not to remain silent in the face of what he termed a “quiet burial of the judiciary’s independence.”
She reminded citizens that democracy falters not with a sudden blow but through the gradual weakening of checks and balances.
As the country watches the committee’s proceedings, he called for unwavering defense of the Judiciary to preserve freedom, justice, and the rule of law for future generations.
