The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will challenge the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary elections in selected polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The party has described the EC’s action as legally baseless and announced plans to file a suit to halt the process.
The EC had earlier explained that the rerun in 19 polling stations was necessary because presiding officers could not verify scanned results used during collation, even though those results had been approved by both parties’ agents.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, July 3, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, argued that the EC’s move to organize a rerun in only parts of the constituency lacked legal merit. He stressed that the directive undermines the integrity of the December 7 parliamentary election results. “We have caused our legal directorate to challenge the directive in court. We shall file in court and challenge the whimsical, capricious directive by the EC,” he stated.
Mr. Frimpong further accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of attempting to reverse an election outcome they lost. “The NDC knows that they lost the election. We in the NPP shall stop at nothing in our quest to ensure that the power that has been respected and upheld by the democratic rights and sovereign will of the people of Ablekuma North is upheld,” he declared.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled the rerun for Friday, July 11, 2025.
