Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Alhassan Tampuli, has defended the minority’s objection to the approval of President Akufo-Addo’s new Supreme Court nominees, insisting that their stance is rooted in principle, not partisanship.
Speaking to the press, Tampuli drew parallels to the position previously taken by the current majority when they were in opposition during the 8th Parliament, noting that consistency in protecting institutional integrity is critical.
“We now have 20 Justices of the Supreme Court,” he stated, cautioning that while the Constitution allows for not less than nine justices, the provision should not be abused.
“We should be guided by the need to protect the public purse,” Tampuli emphasized, describing the move as “not just packing the Supreme Court; it is overloading the Supreme Court.”
The minority’s stance, he concluded, seeks to prevent institutional excess and safeguard the judicial arm from what they view as unnecessary expansion.
