Leader of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nabla, has petitioned the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene in what she calls a politically motivated attempt to remove suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.
Speaking to the media after presenting the petition at Manhyia Palace on Tuesday, July 1, Nabla accused President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating “a political witch hunt” against the Chief Justice.
“We believe our traditional authorities must intervene when state institutions fail,” she stated.
Nabla decried what she described as a pattern of victimisation against women in high office and said the PNP would not remain silent in the face of injustice.
She criticised the timing of the suspension, particularly as it coincided with the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.
“You cannot genuinely pray and give thanks while acting with such vindictiveness. What we need is a National Day of Repentance,” Nabla said.
She rejected accusations of partisanship, saying her party’s stand is rooted in principle.
“I wept listening to her speak about her suffering,” she added, referring to Justice Torkornoo’s recent public comments.
The PNP has called on the Asantehene to use his moral authority to restore judicial independence and safeguard Ghana’s democratic institutions.
