Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, Dr. Alidu Seidu, has thrown his weight behind Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin’s controversial decision to suspend four Members of Parliament (MPs), calling it a bold and necessary step.
Speaking on Prime News on ABC News GH on January 3, Dr. Seidu described the violent parliamentary confrontation that led to the suspensions as one of the lowest moments in government since the beginning of the Fourth Republic.
In his view, the Speaker’s firm stance was not only decisive but also an example of strong leadership needed to uphold discipline and order in Ghana’s legislature.
The suspension, which has been met with fierce opposition from the Minority Caucus, followed a chaotic scene during the vetting process of the Appointments Committee on January 30, 2025.
While critics argue that Speaker Bagbin overstepped his authority, Dr. Seidu believes his action was justified given the gravity of the misconduct.
“The decision taken by the Speaker was very decisive and also exemplary leadership,” he stated.
However, the Speakers established committee investigating the chaos has announced that there will public hearings on Wednesday, February 5.
The NPP has issued also a strong support its caucus demands and request for the reversal of the suspension of their chief whips.
