Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has sharply criticized the handling of Chairman Wontumi’s detention, describing it as a politically motivated strategy.
Speaking to the press after visiting the NIB headquarters, Afenyo-Markin expressed concern over what he called “worrying trends” in the country’s legal and political system, particularly the denial of access to the detainee.
“We couldn’t even get the chance to see Chairman Wontumi,” he revealed. “According to the NIB, he is not their suspect—they claim EOCO handed him over—so they cannot decide who gets access to him. I find it very worrying that in a country like Ghana, such things are allowed to happen. They are using the bail to punish him,” he stated, describing the GHS50 million bail as excessive.
Afenyo-Markin cautioned the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), saying, “They should check some of these things, because posterity is watching them.”
