Renowned anti-corruption advocate Vitus Azeem has asserted that while President John Mahama’s recent asset declaration is a step in the right direction, it will do little to combat corruption in Ghana.
Speaking on ABC’s morning show, Azeem insisted that simply following constitutional provisions on asset declaration is not enough to ensure accountability and transparency in governance.
“The constitution and the Act, if they just follow it, will not be the solution to our corruption fight,” he asserted.
Azeem emphasized that a truly effective asset declaration process must go beyond a mere legal requirement and instead focus on full public disclosure.
“Disclosure means putting it in the public domain,” he stressed, advocating for a system where citizens can scrutinize declared assets to hold public officials accountable.
Azeem further urged all public officials to comply with the upcoming March 31 deadline for asset declarations, noting that while the system may be flawed, it remains an essential part of Ghana’s fight against corruption.
However, he maintained that without greater transparency, the declaration process risks being a symbolic gesture rather than a transformative tool for accountability.
