Private legal practitioner Yaw Dankwah has called on the Attorney General (AG) to provide clear reasons for the recent drop of over six high-profile cases, a move he believes will help restore public confidence in the legal system.
Dankwah, speaking on ABC News GH, emphasized that without a clear explanation, people will continue to question the motivations behind such decisions, particularly with regards to the prosecution of public figures.
“It was wrong for the AG not to prosecute those cases. It makes people believe that prosecution in Ghana is political,” said Dankwah, referring to the decision not to pursue several controversial cases.
He urged the AG’s office to offer transparency about their actions to avoid further public skepticism and to prevent the perception of political bias in the legal system.
Dankwah also weighed in on the ongoing case involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who was recently declared a fugitive by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Although some have criticized the OSP for making the case public, Dankwah defended the office’s decision, asserting that “there is nothing called handling a criminal case diplomatically.”
He reiterated the principle that “no one is above the law,” stressing that public officials must be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their position or status.
