Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin is demanding the full repeal of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 — widely dubbed the “Dumsor Levy” — rejecting the government’s indefinite postponement as a weak and insulting response.
“This postponement is not a solution. It is a shameful retreat that exposes this government’s incompetence and hypocrisy,” the Effutu MP declared in a strongly worded statement on Saturday.
The Ghana Revenue Authority had earlier announced a suspension of the levy’s planned June 16 implementation, citing consultations, but the Minority insists that only a complete withdrawal will be acceptable.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin slammed the policy as poorly thought through, accusing the government of hypocrisy and failed leadership. “It shows they didn’t consult properly.
They rushed the law, and now they’re forced to backtrack. That’s trial-and-error governance,” he said.
He added, “President Mahama promised to bring relief, not more taxes. Yet here we are, with a government that wants to tax fuel during an economic crisis.”
The Minority Leader also pointed to deeper structural issues at ECG, warning that taxes won’t solve the worsening energy crisis. “It’s not tax money we need — it’s reforms,” he stated, calling on Parliament to urgently repeal the law and urging Ghanaians to “join us in resisting this wicked levy.”
