Executive Director of the Centre for Conflict Resolution-Ghana (CENCOR), Rockson Konde, has issued a blistering critique of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), aligning himself with calls from NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia for the complete removal of the EC’s leadership.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with ABC News Gh on Thursday, June 25, Konde stated emphatically, “There is enough evidence that proves the incompetence of the EC officials,” adding that the Commission’s consistent failures must no longer be swept under the carpet.
Konde referenced the 2020 general elections, stating that “but for the restraint of the NDC leadership, Ghana would have gone in flames.”
He highlighted how poorly the Commission managed both the presidential and parliamentary results and credited then-NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s early concession in the 2024 elections for averting potential chaos.
“It was the maturity and early concession of Dr. Bawumia that saved this country from witnessing another electoral catastrophe,” he noted.
He further emphasized that the EC, under its current leadership, has become an institution lacking credibility, impartiality, and national confidence.
“They are not fit for purpose,” he said.
“There is the urgent need for them to resign voluntarily so we can rebuild the Commission with individuals who have national interest at heart.”
Rockson Konde concluded by warning that failure to cleanse the EC ahead of the 2028 elections could endanger the country’s democratic integrity.
