Former Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Ghana, Isaac Donkor, has thrown his support behind the indefinite strike declared by the country’s university senior staff unions.
Speaking to ABC Midday News on Wednesday, Mr. Donkor said the decision was long overdue given the government’s persistent neglect of their concerns.
“We signed an agreement as far back as November 2024. We have made several actions. We have written to them twice and there’s been no acknowledgement,” he stated.
The industrial action, which began today, May 21, is being led by the Senior Staff Association of Ghana in collaboration with the Technical University Administrators Association and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association.
The unions cite the government’s failure—both current and previous administrations to fulfil a six-month-old agreement aimed at improving their working conditions. Members have been instructed to stay home until further notice.
National Chairman George Ansong described the strike as a “last resort” after multiple failed engagements with the government.
Mr. Donkor emphasized the frustration within the unions, stating plainly: “The only language government understands is strike.”
He warned that this latest action is without a timeline, indicating the unions are prepared to hold their position indefinitely.
“Strike has no timeline,” he said, underscoring the seriousness of their resolve. The unions have called on authorities to act swiftly to avert further disruption in the operations of Ghana’s tertiary institutions.
