A mobile money vendor, identified as Christopher Ahordo and popularly known as Colombo, was tragically shot and killed by unidentified armed robbers on the evening of Monday, April 28, in Aflao, located in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
According to Ketu South-based journalist Sylvia Awumey, the incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. near Gbagblakope, close to the Diamond Cement Factory, as Colombo was reportedly closing his shop later than his usual 5:00 p.m. schedule.
Eyewitnesses say two masked assailants in long robes approached him with pump-action shotguns, demanded his bag believed to contain cash and shot him in the chest during their escape.
Colombo is said to have died instantly, with bystanders unable to help due to the robbers firing recklessly while fleeing into a nearby bush.
His body was later retrieved by local residents and deposited at the Ketu South Municipal Hospital mortuary. The matter has since been reported to the municipal police, who have launched an investigation to track down the perpetrators.
The killing adds to a growing trend of violent mobile money-related crimes in Ghana. In recent months, the country has seen a surge in attacks on vendors, particularly in the Ashanti Region, where multiple cases involving fatalities have been recorded.
Security experts have repeatedly urged authorities to implement stronger regulatory and protection measures for mobile money operators, who continue to operate under significant threat.
