Ranking Member on Youth and Sports, Hon. Kobena Woyome, has emphasized the need for a thorough security assessment before any decision is made regarding a new parliamentary chamber.
Speaking on ABC Midday, he acknowledged the increasing security concerns raised by the Speaker of Parliament but insisted that a proper evaluation must be conducted to determine the best course of action.
“Currently, the human intervention—the presence of the police, marshals—are doing their best. If you take all together, there will be the need to really look at the security situation,” he stated.
He stressed that a security assessment would help determine whether improvements should be made within the existing structure or if a new chamber with enhanced security features is required.
His remarks align with concerns raised by the Speaker of Parliament about the vulnerability of MPs and staff due to the ease of access to parliamentary premises.
While Woyome acknowledged that security personnel are working diligently, he maintained that a structured security evaluation is necessary before any major decision is taken.
