Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Committee, Alhassan Tampuli, is advocating for a national conversation on placing a constitutional cap on the number of Supreme Court Justices in Ghana.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament, Tampuli argued that the current constitutional provision—requiring not less than nine judges—grants too much discretionary power to the sitting president, which could potentially be abused.
“We now have 20 Justices of the Supreme Court. This is not just packing the Supreme Court, it is overloading the Supreme Court,” he said.
Tampuli emphasised the need for consensus-building around the issue, suggesting the Minority in Parliament is open to discussions aimed at establishing firm ground rules on appointments to the apex court.
“It’s a position that we, the Minority, will be willing to come to the table for,” he noted.
He also stressed the financial implications of unchecked judicial appointments, urging stakeholders to “be guided by the need to protect the public purse.”
