President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the 2025 budget will include provisions for allowances for assembly members.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2025, he emphasized the need to recognize and support the work of local government representatives, who play a crucial role in grassroots governance.
This announcement marks a significant policy shift aimed at improving the welfare of assembly members, who have long called for financial support to effectively carry out their duties.
In addition to local governance reforms, President Mahama addressed the ongoing financial crisis, highlighting that despite GHS29.9 billion spent on the financial sector cleanup, the sector remains distressed.
He projected that Ghana’s debt servicing over the next four years will reach GHS280 billion, with GHS150 billion for domestic debt and GHS130 billion for external debt servicing.
The President stressed the urgent need for decisive measures to stabilize the economy, warning that failure to act could further weaken investor confidence and economic recovery efforts.
